The Endowment Fund of Bethel United Methodist Church was established in 1981, and a revised Endowment Policy was approved in 2007. The purpose of the Endowment Fund is to provide continuing financial support for the ministries of Bethel in perpetuity. Ministries can include, but are not limited to, the funding of missions, capital additions and improvements, and special programs. Endowment distributions go to purposes that are not covered by Bethel’s annual operating budget.

The annual Endowment distribution amount is determined by a formula designed to continually preserve the market value of the Fund.

The Endowment Committee administers the Endowment Fund and receives gifts and bequests made to the Fund. The Endowment Committee is also responsible for providing information on estate planning and planned giving to the members of Bethel.

A gift to the Bethel Endowment Fund is a gift that will show your love for Bethel church and your faith in perpetuity. After other gifts have been expended, the Endowment Fund continues to provide a reminder of the faith and witness of its donors.
It is a radically successful and colorful instrument, paying noble homage to the great American organ builders E. M. Skinner and G. Donald Harrison. The informal BethElders group comes together periodically throughout the year, primarily for social activities. For example, each year we hold a Spring Garden Party where BethElders are invited to come as guests wearing their spring attire – especially lovely spring hats – to relax in the garden of fellow members, be served tea sandwiches and cakes, play games and visit with one another from the comfort of back porch rocking chairs. Good Christian fellowship is a vital ingredient necessary to sustain the health and continued growth of any church congregation.Bethel Church certainly attempts to provide as many opportunities as possible to get people together in social settings through all of its programming endeavors.
At Bethel, we love to eat, have fun, and get better acquainted with one another through individual group and church-wide events. The bonds formed through social events have often helped many feel more connected to the church and as a result, they have been more willing to participate in the other vital areas of interest of the church, including projects providing service to others and have been more apt to attend those programs, studies, and worship opportunities where spiritual growth takes place.

Blog: Transfiguration Sunday, February 19, 2012

The Shining
This Sunday marks the official close of the Advent-Christmas-Epiphany cycle and seasons. Epiphany Sundays find us looking at manifestations of Christ's godly and powerful nature. Amid Epiphany Sundays we find the story of "The Wisdom of the Aged"--the visit with Simeon and Anna. Also, Jesus' Baptism is visited--when the dove descended and a voice spoke from heaven... we're bordering on supernatural experiences here. Alas, another miracle--during Epiphany we witness Jesus' first miracle at the wedding in Cana, the water made into wine. Ephiphany always closes each year with a magical, unexplained scene... The 'transfiguration' account upon the mountain... It seems somewhat like a vision--or a supernatural experience... involving Moses and Elijah... long gone from the days of Jesus. In the Transfiguration account, Jesus' appearance is documented to have 'changed'... Some translations of the Bible use the words 'shine' and 'glow'...

Therefore, SHINE is always an objective in the sacred music for Transfiguration. The Epiphany hymn, How Brightly Shines the Morning Star occurs twice at Bethel this coming Sunday. First it is heard in an organ voluntary--from 1929 by Max Drischner... who has set the hymn in 12/8 time, a jig (also giga (Italian, German, and English usage) or gigue (French and German usage) dance rhythm. The spelling 'jig' is Irish, and it seldom has been used by serious composers. Seems like the spelling 'jig' has been relagated to folk music bands. Anyway, How Brightly Shines the Morning Star will appear later in the service, sung in a more traditionally square rhythm, by choir. How Brightly Shines... has been around since possibly the 15th century. The 'morning star' is literally the Bethlehem star which led the Wise Kings to Jesus in the manger. However, if you look deeply at all the verses that evolved over the years, How Brightly Shines... is full of double entendres... How Brightly Shines...was one of the most popular German hymns by the mid-1600s, and therefore, we have countless settings of this tune--for instrumental ensembles, organ solos, choir anthems, even choral cantatas exist on this tune. Unfortunately, this fine melody is almost lost in modern Christianity. The text our choir sings this Sunday comes from a popular 19th Century Lenten oratorio--The Passion of Christ by Heinrich Graun. Historians say that Graun's Passion was the first major work done widely across the United States by American choirs. They say that in the late 1800s, it was far more well known than Handel's Messiah. Alas, things come and go. Today, Graun's Passion has faded into oblivion. I chose Graun's text for How Brightly Shines because of one phrase particularly suitable for Transfiguration--"... grant me one brief glimpse of those celestial joys..." I think these words find us aspiring to view Christ's Transfiguration and "that other world."

A Choral 'Shining'
At 11:15 worship, we sing the Sanctus from John Karl Hirten's A Rose Hill Mass. The very pastel and translucent texture of this lovely work perfectly captures for me the mystery of Christ's Transfiguration. The words fit too... But, the mood of this short movement is so misty and gossamer... So delicate... So other-worldly... It has been chosen for its mood. Also from his mass is a three-fold Amen full of mystery--very austere.

A Shining Local Star
We have a local celebrity on hand for 11:15 worship. The giant bronze baritone voice of Robert Dickson joins the full Chancel Choir for some familiar Beethoven. This fine singer is known to many as Charleston's Singing Chef--he was the founder and owner of the gourmet cuisine avec sing chef restaurant, Robert's of Charleston. Mr. Dickson joins his grand voice with the Chancel Choir in a rather 'large' setting of Beethoven's Ode to Joy. These phrases are lifted from Beethoven's Ninth [and last] Symphony. Victorian English musicians tailored these beloved phrases into a hymn tune. We know this stolen symphony theme as the hymn Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee. Actually, this English hymn text rather closely hints at the very philosophical poetry Beethoven set in his final symphony.

Craig Sellars Lang
An incredibly beautiful, and largely neglected, organ prelude by this man is programmed this week. C. S. Lang lived in a time warp. He died in 1972. Lang, however, refused to participate in 20th century compositional trends and madness... Lang was stuck in the Victorian era in which he was born. All of C. S. Lang's life, he was a major figure in British music--but he never let go of Victorian musical styles and values. This won him quite a few friends--also an equal number of enemies who totally dismissed him as being a dinosaur / relic. Lang wrote and preached against the popular trend of the day--dissonance and awkward rhythms. In other words, Lang was a champion of pretty music in an age when ugly was considered enlightened!!! Yes, in my opinion, and in the opinion of C. S. Lang, the 20th century saw ugly come into full fashion and flower. C. S. Lang left behind lots of fine church music. However, he is chiefly remembered today for one piece--his Tuba Tune in D Major. This is a piece written specifically with a large English trumpet stop (Tuba) in mind. It was conceived for a very wide, loud, dark trumpet sound. Tuba Tune is a silly, dressy, happy frolic through a Victorian sabbath. This piece has found some popularity in the past two decades as a wedding processional and recessional in England and America.

Gordon Young
He is mentioned a week or two back in my blogs... I am playing Young's Liturgical Suite, broken up and played in three different parts of the services. You'll see his name listed during gathering music, prelude, and postlude. Gordon Young comes in mightly handy when you are suffering from broken ribs... His music makes a fine statement without torturing the organist's body and technique.

In Upcoming Weeks...
.... Look for recurring themes... Several sneak attacks are planned upon your subconscious ears and spirits... Themes heard by organ, bells, or instruments will later in the service be taken up by the choir. Throughout Lent, you will be hearing some recurring themes.

MUSIC FOR ASH WEDNESDAY
Chancel Choir sings yet more music from Rose Hill Mass, this time the Kyrie. Also, they do a modern setting of an ancient hymn that probably dates to around the 12th century--a very dark, ashy piece... a choral plea for better times and for enlightenment. Douglas Wagner entitled this piece A Lenten Meditation. Incidentally, Douglas Wagner is one of the modern American composers I trust and respect completely without reservation. If I ever see a new [or old] piece penned by Douglas Wagner, I buy it--don't have to look inside the pages or play it... Douglas Wagner on the cover. SOLD! Also, a brief chant from the Taize Community of France is heard. Oh... Also on this night the very holy Raymond Haan (I also buy anything with this man's name on it) makes an appearance at the Prelude... One of his Psalm Reflections for Organ... We hear a very somber piece Haan calls Plaint--and it makes superb use of our organ's rare and beautifully French Horn stop.

Blog: Music for Sunday, February 12

Richard Proulx
... A legend in American church music. This man left behind tons of choral and instrumental works. He worked in every genre... He set plainsong, and he arranged for massive choirs with large brass ensemble accompaniment. He wrote for congregations, and for choir. His name will forever be linked with Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral. Richard Proulx served the American Catholic Church during tiring, tedious years. In fact, he served in the 'war zone.' Richard Proulx composed and led music in the Post-Vatican II era. And, his biggest contribution is that he wrote traditionally in a time of great transition. Richard Proulx wrote sacred service music to be accompanied by organ--when organ was very much out of style and on the wane in the Catholic church. Richard Proulx kept organ alive in the years that guitar ensembles were the leading accompanimental texture in American masses.

At Bethel, we've used his settings for years--a set of communion responses and numerous choral anthems. This week we are revisiting his most popular work--A Community Mass, 1971. This set of service music has been adopted globally. It is used in England, Australia, Canada, the US, Australia, Africa... Every continent has heard this music. It has appeared in several additions--each one becoming a bit more involved, tricky, demanding, and glamorous. This week at 11:15, we hear the Gloria, Sanctus, and Amen portions.

A sad tale concerning this man's life... And, it's the tale of many leaders in church music. Richard Proulx was absolutely wedded to his church position and to composing music. Richard Proulx was an obssessive overachiever. It suited his personality type that in mid-life he suffered a devastating heart attack. And, there was much chatter about it... Here he was laid up in the hospital at death's door, the most prestigious Roman Catholic musician in America, the musical leader of the Chicago Cathedral----and he had no health insurance. One would think that a person in such a high place would have a fine salary and benefits package. This is not the case in the world of music. No health insurance, and working in The Chicago Cathedral. Quite a little scandal...

Richard Proulx lived on some years after that heart attack, but not long. The heart damage was done. But, he left behind a great legacy. Locally, you'll hear his music in most of the Catholic churches, at Bethel, at St. Matthew's Lutheran, and in practically all Episcopal churches... Oh, excuse me.. I'm supposed to call them Anglican these days.

Organ Music
I'm playing a French Baroque piece that shows the organ's flutes very well. It is a Rondeau by Dandrieu. For my taste, it is almost too precious... William Hunt--here'a a name you don't hear often. He was an early English Victorian composer. His Organ Prelude in D-flat Major is heard this Sunday. OH!!! And, one of the most beautiful TRANSCRIPTIONS you'll ever hear....by Stephano Donhaudy... A minor Sicilian composer. His Aria in A-flat was actually written as a vocal piece... It was popular with singers like Enrico Caruso, Rosa Ponselle, and Claudia Muzio. Edouard Batiste, a seldom heard French organ composer makes an appearance at the Postlude--a sassy Grand Choeur in G Minor.

HYMNS
... Great beloved standards which love the organ... All kinds of special treatments in store.
From All That Dwell Below the Skies
Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation
Jesus, Lover of My Soul

HAVEN'T YOU GOTTEN THOSE ALLELUIAS OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM YET?
... A Chancel Choir soprano asked me. The answer? Not quite... I have Alleluia-ed us to death in the past weeks... Threefold Alleluias in every service. There is a method and plan here---I've been trying to mark the weeks of Epiphany as an "Alleluia Zone." Because coming shortly is Lent--the season in which we silent the word "Alleluia." These constant Alleluias? Two reasons: 1) to mark Epiphany; 2) to create dire absence of that word for the six weeks of Lent.
